Benefits of Custom Dental Crowns

dental crown covers the exposed side of a tooth to improve its strength and appearance. You may need this type of restoration to address concerns such as damage, wear, or discoloration. Known for being extremely versatile, a crown can also repair functional chewing problems, cover misshapen teeth, and strengthen a tooth following a root canal.

Before you get a crown, it’s important to know that they are not all the same. Many dentists offer milled crowns that are machine-fabricated using stock images. Dental crowns created by a technician working at a commercial laboratory are also common.

At Prosthetic Dentistry of Washington, D.C., we exclusively offer hand-crafted dental crowns. Our in-house technician has been working directly with patients to provide the best-fitting, best-looking crowns restorations 1985. Below, learn more about the benefits you can expect to enjoy from the custom dental crowns made in our in-house lab.

Aesthetic Advantages

We work incredibly hard to ensure your crowns look natural and beautiful. Achieving optimal aesthetics involves designing your crown to align with your natural tooth shape. It is also important for your crown to complement your unique facial structure. Unfortunately, not all crowns have a custom anatomic form like ours.

Next, we perform detailed three-dimensional internal shading, as opposed to simply staining the surface. Our technician works with you during this step to match the color and translucent properties of your natural teeth. Then, we overlay any of our five top porcelains before staining your final crowns chairside.

Many patients come to us wanting to replace unaesthetic crowns placed elsewhere. Often, these restorations are opaque, monochromatic, and lack natural translucency.

Functional Benefits

Our crowns are designed to offer optimal fit and function. Dr. Marlin is a perfectionist dedicated to providing the best possible results for his patients.

At our practice, we fabricate your crowns based on highly-accurate impressions of your teeth, which helps ensure a precise fit. Before placement, we check the fit of each crown under a microscope. Then at insertion, Dr. Marlin adjusts the contact points between teeth and checks that the restorations are biocompatible with the gum tissue.

After seating the crowns, Dr. Marlin will take X-rays to ensure that the fit of each crown is exact. From there, he can focus on adjusting the bite if necessary. Unfortunately, poor-fitting crowns or an incorrect bite after placement can lead to pain, tooth decay, or even TMJ disorder.

Improved Longevity

The average life expectancy of a typical dental crown is five to ten years. However, our hand-crafted dental crowns have lasted for 35 years or more with the proper care. They are made to retain their strength long after others may fail.

Dr. Marlin never compromises on quality. He is meticulous in his work and is committed to offering highly-functional, long-lasting crowns.
