What Types of Sedation do you offer at your DC Cosmetic & Implant Dental practice?

We offer the following types of dental sedation at Elite Prosthetic Dentistry:

Nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas, is administered through a comfortable mask. It works to put you in a calm state almost instantly, and the effects wear off minutes after you stop breathing it in. At our practice, we use nitrous to supplement oral sedation and to make patients feel at ease during longer procedures.

Oral conscious sedation is a simple and popular method of achieving a relaxed state. You will be given a pill to take before your dental procedure to calm your nerves. Depending on how you respond to the medication and the length of your treatment, you may be given additional pills during your visit. With oral sedation, you will be awake and able to respond to our team, but you will likely not remember much about your appointment afterward.

IV sedation allows you to achieve the deepest level of relaxation. Administered by a nurse anesthetist, intravenous sedatives put you in a sleep-like state. This option is ideal for patients who suffer from extreme anxiety or who are undergoing a very involved procedure. We perform complex restorative and surgical procedures under IV sedation.

Dr. Marlin will work with you to determine the appropriate sedative or combination of sedatives for your dental treatment. He will take the time to understand your reasons for pursuing sedation dentistry to figure out the ideal options and doses for your situation.

wa Are Dedicated to Your Comfort

Offering sedation dentistry is only one of the ways in which Dr. Marlin and his team work to improve your dental experience. At Elite Prosthetic Dentistry, you’ll find,

  • Judgement-free Dentistry : You may be afraid of being scolded or judged during your dental visit, especially if it has been a long time since your last appointment. Our staff is committed to creating a judgment-free environment and helping you reach your goals for your smile.
  • Communication: Not knowing what will happen during a dental visit can lead to stress and anxiety. We can help you overcome your fear of the unknown by explaining your options clearly and engaging in open and honest communication about your treatment. We create a space where you can freely express your concerns and ask any questions you may have.
  • Gentle techniques: We use gentle techniques during your dental visits to ensure your comfort. For example, we apply a topical numbing gel prior to giving anesthetic to lessen any stinging sensations.
  • Headphones: Many people find the sounds associated with dental visits unpleasant. We offer stereo headphones connected to Sirius radio or your own iPhone to block out treatment noises. You can select the Sirius radio station you prefer or use our headphones to play your music.

Sedation Dentistry Chevy Chase, Bethesda and Arlington, VA- FAQS

Sedation dentistry involves using safe oral, I.V., or inhalation medication to help patients feel calm and comfortable before and during dental treatments. It can be used in a variety of situations, from routine cavity fillings to lengthier procedures.

Most patients are good candidates for Sedation Dentistry.

Over the last 12 years, we have been routinely recommending oral sedation for many long procedures including cosmetic dentistry, dental implant surgery, dental implant restoration. Most of our patients have liked the concept and benefited from that treatment regimen. We appreciate how it helps them.

We use a combination of sedation and local anesthetic to keep you relaxed and pain-free throughout your procedure. With I.V. sedation, our anesthetist precisely controls the depth of the sedation depending upon the type of procedure and whether we need your cooperation such as biting down. He can vary the depth of the anesthesia as needed.

Yes. Before any sedation procedures, we review your medical history that includes an annual medical exam with appropriate laboratory tests within the last year. If you have a specific condition, we review your status with your internist. We prescribe very safe oral medications.

For I.V. sedation, we use the services of an experienced anesthetist who is concentrating on your health maintenance, while we spend our time exclusively treating your dental issues. Prior to undergoing an I.V. Sedation procedure, the anesthetist reviews your medial history, in detail. The procedure, twilight sedation, is relatively mild and you are continuously being assessed by a heart monitor.

We offer all levels of sedation oral, I.V., and nitrous oxide sedation, depending upon your preference.

You will be sedated during most of the procedure, which varies for each type of procedure.

No. I.V. sedation dentistry is equivalent to “twilight” sedation administered during a colonoscopy. You are comfortably unaware of your treatment regimen.

For either oral or nitrous oxide sedation, eat breakfast or lunch before your appointment to maintain normal blood glucose levels. For appointments that you are receiving I.V. sedation, do NOT eat breakfast before your visit. Take your routine medications and those specific to your procedure (Eg. Antibiotics).

Most patients have little to no memory of their treatment and feel good afterward.

Most dentists have taken the requisite pharmacology courses for oral or nitrous sedation. For I.V. sedation, we have a well-trained anesthetist to administer the medications.

Oral and I.V. sedation will lessen your gag reflex, suppress pain responses, reduce anxiety, and more. For several hours after the procedure, you will experience those side affects as they wear off. Overall, you will feel good. To varying degrees, you may also experience drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, and fogginess or loss of memory of the dental procedure, depending upon the strength of the sedation medication.

With I.V. sedation, do not drink fluids up to 6 hours before the procedure. Your fluid intake is not restricted with oral sedation.

You can drink water and eat light foods after dental sedation, being mindful to keep quantities light to prevent nausea.
