What Is A Prosthodontist?
Nine specialties are recognized by the American Dental Association in the United States: orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, periodontics, pediatric dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral and maxillofacial pathology, endodontics, public health dentistry, oral and maxillofacial radiology, and prosthodontics.
At Elite Prosthetic Dentistry, our founder, Dr. Gerald Marlin, is a highly accomplished prosthodontist. But what exactly is a prosthodontist, and what do they do?
Prosthodontists keep teeth looking their best while giving people beautiful smiles and fixing complex dental issues. Prosthodontics focuses on restoring and maintaining oral function, appearance, comfort, and health by replacing missing teeth and adjacent tissues with artificial substitutes, or prostheses, such as:
A highly trained prosthodontist and cosmetic dentist can consistently deliver high-quality and long-lasting results.
Your Dental Implant Options in Washington DC
We provide ideally positioned dental implants (see Precision Implant Placement) in reconstructed bone (see Bone Grafting) that are restored with optimum “emergence profile” abutments and “Simply Radiant, Simply Natural” crowns fabricated in ourr In-house Laboratory, which will make you feel and look reinvigorated.! Implant Surgeries with Crowns and Same-Day Implant Therapy are highly sophisticated services that we perform with meticulous care and precision such that, after 3,600 implants surgically inserted and restored, our patients have experienced virtually almost no bone loss over at least a 20-year span.
Achieving the title of prosthodontist requires first obtaining a DMD or DDS degree, which takes about four years, followed by an additional three years of specialty training with either a certificate of advanced training or an MS degree in prosthodontics. This can only be achieved after three or four years of college following a pre-dental education. In all, the process takes ten or eleven years at a minimum. The prospective prosthodontist must complete this specialized training at an ADA-accredited prosthodontic education program.
There are many good General Dentists providing beneficial service to their patients. We know. Many of them refer patients to us because special issues require specialists.
While general dentists and prosthodontists both provide valuable services to their patients, there are some key distinctions between the two.
The most significant difference between a general dentist and a prosthodontist is that a prosthodontist specializes in replacing and repairing teeth (via implants, crowns, etc.) and restoring your oral health and function throughout your entire mouth. Conversely, general dentists concentrate on routine dental care, which may also involve other types of repairs (fillings, gum care, root canals, etc.).
If you require implant, cosmetic or advanced tooth replacement, it’s best to seek the advice and services of a prosthodontist who will ensure that you get efficient, top-quality treatment that matches your exact needs and produces beautiful, long-term solutions for your smile. Dr. Marlin often works very closely with general dentists who refer patients to him for his renowned expertise with complex tooth replacements.
As you search for a prosthodontist near me, you should keep an eye out for several key attributes:
Does the prosthodontist list their background? Be sure to investigate their website profile for details about their education, certifications, etc. If they do not list their experience, you should ask yourself why.
Does the doctor have positive online reviews? If most of the prosthodontist’s reviews are positive, this is a good indication that you are making the right choice.
Does the prosthodontist have a robust before and after photo gallery on their website? If so, this can be a great way to review the quality and aesthetics of their actual work for yourself.
Is this person someone you could trust and get along with? Have they been in business for a long time? If they have been in practice for many years and have many positive reviews, this is a good sign that they are qualified and compassionate.
Has the prosthodontist been recognized for their work? If so, what is the recognition for? Awards and recognitions can signify this person’s ongoing dedication to the highest levels of care and excellence in their field.
