We Offer the Latest Digital Technologies for All Patients at Elite Prosthetic Dentistry

Intraoral Scanner for Increased Accuracy and Comfort:

Provides increased accuracy and a better patient experience as we replace clinical impressions with digital impressions of the prepared teeth.

Cone Beam CT Scanner for Precision Dental Implants:

Provides 3-D imaging of the jaw prior to surgically inserting the implant. Using “virtual reality”, Dr. Marlin “places” each implant on the CT scan taking into account the location of the nerve, sinus, and the angulation of the bone – and in relation to the overlying crown. He uses this information to create a precise surgical guide for the best implant placement.

Even though we have been using Cone Beam CT Scan images (CBCT) for over twelve years for diagnosis and treatment planning, we supplemented our office technology with our own cone beam CT Scanner 5 years ago. This new scanner provides highly accurate and undistorted 3D radiographic images that show the height, the width, and angle of the bone, the location of the nerves and the sinuses, as well as other pertinent data. The CBCT images are an additional diagnostic tool which we utilize to design all of our CT Scan generated Surgical Guides-the most accurate of all. In our opinion, it is imperative that either a surgical stent, or, preferably, a CT Scan generated Surgical Guide must be used for the most precise implant placement.

We chose the Carestream 9300 CBCT unit because it emits one of the lowest doses of radiation, while affording us the option of taking a smaller set of images for restoring a single tooth or a small bridge with implants. In addition, its integrated software provides tools for our surgical preplanning. We are pleased to offer this technology on-site for the convenience of our patients, along with our existing digital and panoramic X-rays.

Dental Radiographs:

Invaluable aids in diagnosing, treating, and maintaining dental health. Radiographs allow us to see everything we cannot see with our own eyes. We can better detect cavities in between your teeth, determine bone level, and the health of the bone. We can also examine the roots and nerves of teeth, diagnose lesions such as cysts or tumors, as well as assess damage when trauma occurs.

Utilizing digital imaging technology, we can also view your teeth magnified on a high resolution computer monitor. With computers in each treatment room, we have immediate access to your stored X-rays, images, and dental records. In addition, digital X-rays results in 1/6th the radiation exposure to you.

Digital imaging not only enables us to manage valuable diagnostic information, but also enables us to quickly transfer your digital X-rays to appropriate specialists.

Guidelines to x-ray frequencies (due to your dental conditions, your individual needs may differ):

  • Full Mouth X-Rays/ Complete Series including Bitewings 22 individual films that encompass your full mouth. We recommend completing the Full Series X-rays at your initial visit, then every 3-4 years thereafter.
  • Bitewings 4 films typically taken once a year at your recall. These X-rays show upper and lower molars.
  • Intraoral Periapical one individual X-ray of a problem area
  • Panorex This is a complete mouth X-ray that is taken on an as needed basis to either visualize the nerve canal and the sinuses for implant placement or to look for suspected lesions. This X-ray does not provide adequate detail to diagnose the individual teeth for decay.

Our In-House Laboratory for Superior Aesthetics and Fit

We are one of the only prosthodontist’s offices in Washington DC with an in-house laboratory, providing better quality control than is available from commercial laboratories. We have two porcelain ovens and use any one of 6 different porcelains for fabricating custom crowns with the most precise fit and optimal aesthetics. Our office does not use milled crowns, which are produced by choosing from stock in a CAD software library. Milled crowns do not compare with crowns that are custom fabricated to your specific jaw anatomy, bite, and tooth coloration and translucency.

Interactive 3D Implant Dental Imaging

SimPlant Interactive 3D Implant Planning System

The Washington DC & Chevy Chase dental specialist office of Dr. Gerald Marlin uses SimPlant software, the world’s first interactive 3D implant Planning System. This software allows us to examine the anatomy of the patient’s jaw in one millimeter increments. No digital X-ray can provide this type of comprehensive information for precise preoperative planning. The ability to do virtual treatment, while considering both clinical and esthetical factors, produces accurate and more predictable result.
