What Causes a Dental Implant Failure?

Dental implants are perhaps the most robust and reliable tooth replacement solution available. However, despite their incredibly high success rate (97% for our patients, and 85%–90% on average nationwide), failure is still possible.

Many factors can limit the success of a dental implant, including:

Patients have also come to us with failed mini-implants restored with crowns. Mini implants are intended to stabilize an overdenture, not individual crowns. Regardless of the cause of the failed/broken dental implant, the repair work poses a challenge that not every dentist is equipped to take on.

How Does Dr. Marlin Fix Failing Dental Implants?

Fortunately, Dr. Marlin and his team have extensive experience dealing with compromised dental implants. Treatment often involves repairing the bond around the implant with a graft. Sometimes, Dr. Marlin must remove an implant, rejuvenate the site with a bone graft, and place a new implant. Dr. Marlin creates a personalized program for each patient to ensure they receive the most suitable treatment methods for their situation. The section below outlines one of Dr. Marlin’s implant repair cases.

Success Story: Saving a Dental Implant

In this example, the implant under the abutment and crown started to lose bone seven years after its placement and restoration. The implant showed extensive bone loss for approximately one-third of its length.

In order to detoxify and regraft the bony housing around the implant, the abutment and crown were removed, bone graft material was combined with a growth factor, and the implant was “buried” under a protective filter below the gingiva (gum tissue).

An X-ray taken after four months showed new bone formation that not only filled in around the implant’s side but actually grew over the top. After five months, the implant was exposed, and the abutment and crown were reseated. This approach saved the implant without the need for removal.

Preventing Future Dental Implant Failure

Most implant complications can be avoided with proper hygiene and planning. Choosing the right surgeon is by far the most crucial consideration to ensure the longevity of your implants. Some tips for prolonging the longevity of your dental implants include:

Smoking is directly related to a higher dental implant complication rate. Additionally, any level of gum disease that results from smoking can also be a risk factor that causes dental implants to fail.

Brushing your teeth and flossing twice daily should be a part of your routine, as well as using an alcohol-free antibacterial mouthwash.

Your diet can influence the success of your implant. It’s best to avoid eating foods that can overtax the implant—especially during the osseointegration phase.
